Overview
Craig & Rose is one of the UK’s longest established paint manufacturers and the luxurious ‘1829 Vintage Colour Collection’ is its flagship range. Named after the year the company was founded, the luxurious 1829 collection was launched in 2000, then relaunched in 2017. It was researched using the company’s historic archives and developed to reflect its heritage. Featuring 110 vintage shades, the 1829 Vintage Colour Collection recreates colours from historical periods including Art Deco, Victorian, Renaissance and the Ancient World. All the colours come in three easy-to-maintain traditional finishes - Chalky Emulsion, Eggshell and Gloss – and the finish variations mean you can co-ordinate colours for both your walls and woodwork.
Craig & Rose are famous for their durable Chalky Emulsion - a luxurious soft and chalky matt finish with excellent depth of colour. Chalky emulsion paints are perfect for interior walls and ceilings and are ideal for upcycling furniture when finished with a protective wax or varnish.

Preparation
To attain the best results, ensure surfaces to be painted are structurally sound, clean, dry and free from dirt, dust or any other surface contaminants.
- Remove all loose and defective paint by either using a paint scraper, paint stripper or sanding down the project area
- Special care should be taken if removing pre 1960s paint as this could contain harmful levels of lead
- Repair any defects such as cracks or holes with a suitable filler to produce a surface free of imperfections and then sanded smooth
- If necessary, sand the project area to produce a flat smooth surface
- If the project area shows signs of grease or oil, then wash with a suitable detergent and allow to dry thoroughly
- When applying to new plaster, the area should be primed with a suitable wall undercoat
Application
Always perform a test area before starting any project to assess the suitability of the product and the finish.
Use only in well ventilated areas, ensuring that airflow is properly circulated to lessen any effects from the V.O.C fumes.
Avoid applying Craig & Rose 1829 Chalky Emulsion if the room or surface temperatures are liable to fall close to freezing as this could destroy the structure of paint and seriously hamper the drying process.
- Stir and blend the paint thoroughly before use, making sure the sides and the base of the tin are thoroughly worked to ensure a consistent and smooth blend of pigment and paint medium
- If being applied directly on to a plaster surface, it is advisable to dilute Craig & Rose 1829 Chalky Emulsion by 5-10% to counteract any excessive suction
-
Craig & Rose 1829 Chalky Emulsion can be applied by either brush, roller or spray. If a spraying system is being used, then refer to the manufacturer for the correct dilution ratios
- The standard application will require two coats of Craig and Rose 1829 Chalky Emulsion Paint to produce a solid and opaque finish, though more layers might be necessary depending on the quality of the undercoat and the previous colour of the project area
- To produce a consistent coverage spread the paint evenly in multiple directions taking care not to apply to thinly and overspread
- It is recommended to leave 4 hours between coats to allow sufficient drying time
- To clean the equipment, rinse with clean water and wash hands with warm soapy water
